RESEARCH ACTIVITIES<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the Department of Mineralogy and Petrology, an ongoing research program addresses contemporary topics in petrology, geochemistry, mineralogy, and geochronology related to magmatic, metamorphic, and sedimentary rocks of southwestern Poland, as well as the the application of methods from the broadly understood mineralogical sciences in studies of Poland’s historic sites.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Within the general theme, more specific research objectives are pursued, including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

– Petrology, geochemistry and age of selected magmatic rocks of Lower Silesia (M. Awdankiewicz)
– Petroarchological studies of stone monuments and ancient ceramics (P. Gunia)
– Geochemistry and mineralogy of pegmatites (A. Szuszkiewicz)
– Geochronological studies of magmatic and metamorphic rocks of the Sudetes and their foreland (K. Turniak)
– Raman spectroscopy in mineralogical studies (I. Korybska-Sad\u0142o).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

LABORATORIES AND APPARATUS<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Department operates three laboratories:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \n
  1. Gemology, Petroarchaeology, and Technical Petrography Laboratory (head \u2013 Dr. Prof. P.Gunia)<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  2. Mineral Separation and Enrichment Laboratory (head \u2013 Dr. K.Turniak)<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  3. X-ray Diffraction Laboratory (informal laboratory, supervisor \u2013 Dr. K.Turniak)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    The Department’s staff also operates the institute’s laboratory:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Electron Microscopy Laboratory (head \u2013 Dr. Prof. M.Awdankiewicz)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    These laboratories perform various tasks related to rock and mineral preparation, mineral separation (e.g., zircon), phase studies, chemical determinations, and imaging of rocks and minerals for the needs of Institute staff, Faculty, and external units (e.g., KGHM Cuprum, Poltegor, Polish Academy of Sciences, and others).<\/p>\n<\/div>

    Currently, the Department’s employees are involved in several research projects carried out in cooperation with scientific centers in Poland and abroad, including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Grant of the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage in the field of “Protection of archaeological monuments”, implemented by the Archaeological Museum in Gda\u0144sk<\/td>Studium \u017cycia Gda\u0144ska przedlokacyjnego. Opracowanie wynik\u00f3w bada\u0144 przy ul. Tartacznej w Gda\u0144sku w latach 2008-2010 [Study of the life of pre-charter Gda\u0144sk. Processing the results of research at Tartaczna Street in Gda\u0144sk in the years 2008-2010]<\/em><\/td>carried out by Piotr Gunia<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

    DIDACTICS<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The Department’s staff conduct lectures, classes, laboratory classes, and fieldwork for students of bachelor’s, engineering, and master’s studies in the fields of: Geology, Geological Engineering, Environmental Protection, and Applied Geoscience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
