History of the Library and collection profile
The Geological Library was established with the founding of the Institute of Geological Sciences on October 1, 1967. Work began to secure, merge, and catalog mainly pre-World War II German books and journals, which were previously scattered among the various geological and mineralogical departments. These collections, consisting of approximately 5,000 volumes, now constitute a unique collection of geological works published from the early 19th century to 1945. Simultaneously, contemporary books and journals in the field of Earth sciences were actively collected, initially only in Polish but later also in Russian, English, and French, thereby creating an essential scientific foundation for teaching. In 1999, the Geological Library was relocated to a new building, a distinctive rotunda, and occupied premises with a total area of 360 square meters. In the same year, the library incorporated the institute’s cartographic collections, totaling around 7,000 inventory units. These map collections can be broadly divided into two groups: historical German maps from the 19th and early 20th centuries and those published in Poland after 1945 (maps of the Sudetes and foothills have also been available electronically for several years). Currently, the book collection of the Geological Library comprises around 60,000 volumes, including over 300 titles of Polish and foreign journals. The reading room, which has 40 seats, includes two computer workstations, and students and staff have access to electronic databases of Polish and foreign journals. Furthermore, scientific publications by employees and doctoral students of the Institute of Geological Sciences have been recorded in the library’s database since 2006 and are accessible in the university-wide “Bibliography of Publications by Employees and Doctoral Students of the University of Wrocław.”
