Exhibitions

Permanent exhibitions
  • Evolution of terrestrial plants: Fossil plant specimens from around the world.
  • Evolution of the animal world: Fascinating fossil specimens of animals (mainly invertebrates) from around the world.
  • Documentation of stratigraphy of rock formations of the Sudetes and their foreland compared with specimens from other parts of Poland and the world. This exhibition features primarily fossils found in the Sudetes and their forelands, as well as specimens from other regions of Poland, Europe and the world.
  • Geological structure of the Sudetes and their foreland in a regional arrangement. Here you can learn about the various rocks that build the Sudetes and their foreland.
  • How rocks are formed. This exhibition is complemented by commonly encountered rocks for direct observation.
  • Basics of geotectonics. Three boards here present basic data on the structure of the Earth, global geological processes and contemporary geotectonic theories. The exhibition features a large geological globe, one of seven in Poland.
  • Ślęża Massif: A typical rock assemblage for contemporary global geological considerations. An exhibition by Prof. Alfred Majerowicz.

Educational offer

Museum lessons

The museum conducts museum lessons in geology. Prepared topics include the basics of the science of rocks, minerals, fossils, geological processes, the history of the Earth and life on Earth, regional geology of Poland and the Sudetes. The content is adapted to the participants’ age (from preschoolers to students). The lessons use a rich collection of instructional rocks, minerals, and fossils. More information is available on the Museum’s official website.

Workshops

During workshops, participants learn in practice about the work of a geologist and gain basic knowledge about identifying minerals and rocks. For the youngest, workshops focus on creating plaster casts of fossils. More information is available on the Museum’s official website.

Plaster casts of fossils

The museum offers the sale of rock samples and plaster casts of fossils. Individual pieces and instructional sets are available for purchase. VAT invoices are provided. More information is available on the Museum’s official website.

Digital Museum

In November 2017, the University of Wroclaw received funding for the project “Leopoldina online – a platform for integrating and sharing electronic resources of the University of Wrocław for science, education and popularization of knowledge.”This project is being implemented as part of the Operational Program “Digital Poland for the years 2014-2020.” The aim of this project is to create a platform that allows for free sharing of the University of Wrocław’s scientific achievements and collections with a wide range of audiences. The collections of university museums, the Botanical Garden, and the Department of Physical Geography have been gathered in the Digital Museum.

The Geological Museum is also participating in this project. The plan is to make 4,000 specimens available online. Many of these are unique collections, not accessible to visitors on a daily basis. They come from all around the world, collected in hundreds of locations, both in renowned scientific sites and in less known areas. Some of these places are already inaccessible or exhausted. A significant portion of the collection was amassed by world-renowned authors of fundamental publications in the fields of stratigraphy and paleontology. The “Leopoldina Online” project allows for their presentation to a broad audience both in Poland and abroad. The sharing of collections will continue after the project’s completion.

The project website is available at www.leopoldina.pl
