Study information – 2nd Cycle – Master Geology Program

If you are passionate about mountains, enjoy traveling, and are interested in lab work or applications of computer methods, consider studying geology!

Course description

Master Geology is a 2-year study program where you will learn enhance your knowledge and skills in the field of natural sciences, exact sciences, technical sciences, and broadly defined information technologies. After completing your education, you will obtain the Masters degree

At the second cycle program, you can pursue your academic and professional interests, participate in scientific research, and work independently in state-of-the-art laboratories using world-class equipment. A wide range of elective modules and the support of a scientific advisor will allow you to shape your educational path to best prepare you for entering the professional and academic market.

The general concept of 2nd cycle geological program conducted at the University of Wrocław is to obtain learning outcomes in the following areas:

From the start, you choose one of the 4 popular and in-demand specializations: exploratory geology, hydrogeology, applied petrology and mineralogy, geochemistry, and waste management. The specialization is achieved by selecting 3 out of 13 attractive and modern specialization modules: environmental geochemistry; environmental management; paleoenvironment reconstruction; reservoir rock geology; structural geology and geological mapping; resource exploration and documentation; energy resources (coal, oil, gas); the continental crust: from micro to global scale; magmatism: processes, rocks, minerals; applied mineralogy and geochemistry; underground water flow and pollutant migration; recognition of aquifer structures; underground water resources and their exploitation; engineering geology. During your studies, you can also choose from a range of specialized elective subjects in both Polish and English.

The learning outcomes of the 2nd Cycle Geology Program mainly concern: deepening knowledge, acquiring advanced skills, including research competencies, in the chosen specialization.

We implement selected key laboratory, practical, workshop, and field activities in full-time mode, maintaining sanitary regime in small groups.

Graduate’s Profile

The curriculum of the second cycle program is focused, to a much greater extent than the first cycle program, on shaping skills essential for future professional work. Graduates should be specialists who, based on acquired theoretical knowledge and practical skills, are prepared for independent work in basic and applied geology, as well as environmental protection. They should also be able to lead team tasks requiring creative initiative. The presented education concept is closely linked with socio-economic needs and labor market expectations, which are defined and verified mainly through the voices of internal and external stakeholders.

Practical classes and fieldwork

Studies in this field of study incorporate a high proportion of practical classes (laboratory classes, project classes, fieldwork) into the program. A major advantage is the fieldwork in attractive regions of the country and abroad, including places like the Czech Republic and Austria. Field activities will give you a different approach to learning and socialising. Students also participate in scientific camps and expeditions to various parts of the world (Spitzbergen, Greenland, Indonesia, Chile, Scandinavia, Cyprus, Albania, and others). The unique “field” atmosphere of geological studies is something truly worth experiencing.

During your studies, you will also have the opportunity to take part in internships offered by leading companies in the geological, mining, and exploration sectors, as well as by the government. While these internships aren’t mandatory, many of our students opt to take them. We also support our graduates in actively entering the job market by organizing various workshops and trainings.

What after graduation?

– employment opportunities

The knowledge gained during geological studies will enable you to primarily work in various industrial and service sectors related to the extraction and exploration of natural resources, as well as in construction and environmental protection. Graduates can also work in geological services, state administration, and many research institutions.

– further learning opportunities

You can also choose to further your education with second cycle program in a doctoral school at the University of Wrocław or other universities in Poland or abroad.

Scientific circles

The Institute is home to the SKN of Geologists (http://www.geolodzy.uni.wroc.pl/). Remember that as a student of the University of Wrocław, you can participate in all the scientific circles and student organizations that interest you, regardless of your course of study. Our university has over 170 scientific circles (Check the list of scientific circles).
