Student Scientific Circle of Geologists

Student Scientific Circle of Geologists

The Student Scientific Circle of Geologists is an inclusive organization that brings together students from the University of Wroclaw who are passionate about geology. Established in 1949, it became a vital facet of student life at the Institute of Geological Sciences at the University of Wroclaw. Professor Józef Zwierzycki served as the Circle’s inaugural supervisor. Over the years, the Circle has spearheaded a myriad of activities, including geological excursions, summer science camps, public science lectures, photography contests, and mineral collection exhibitions. Many members began their research within the Circle, frequently publishing their findings in scientific journals.

The Circle features various thematic sections, including hydrogeology, paleontology and stratigraphy, mineralogy, lithosphere dynamics, deposit geology, and engineering geology. Throughout its history, the SSCG has collaborated with numerous entities such as the Scientific Circle of Geologists of the AGH University of Kraków, the Circle of Young Geologists from Warsaw, the Scientific Circles of Geographers from the University of Wrocław and Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań, and geology students from the University in Brno. The Circle has received multiple accolades from the Minister of Science and Higher Education through the StRuNa competition, which evaluates the contributions of student organizations. The StRuNa awards bestowed upon SSCG include:

  • in 2011, the Circle was awarded the first prize by Minister Barbara Kudrycka for organizing the scientific camp titled “Albania — in the footsteps of Professor Stanislaw Zuber”,
  • in 2014, for the organization of the scientific camp “Scandinavia 2014”, the Circle earned a commendation from Minister Lena Kolarska-Bobińska,
  • in 2015, the Circle received what might be the most prestigious recognition in the StRuNa Student Scientific Movement competition: an honorable mention in the “Scientific Circle of the Year” category. This award was presented by Minister Jarosław Gowin, through Deputy Minister Piotr Dardziński.

Currently, the SSCG Board consists of:

President: Wojciech Durak
Vice President for Organizational Affairs: Karol Greczyński
Vice President for Promotion: Jakub Krasiński
Secretary: Józef Grzelak
Spokesperson: Julia Miszczak

Most important dates in the history of the Student Scientific Circle of Geologists:

1964 — SSCG students undertook scientific camps near Lubin and Polkowice, focusing on the documentation of copper deposits,
1968 — Under the leadership of Stanisław Lorenc, the Circle’s president at the time, a scientific camp was organized in Sweden. This event garnered significant attention, with extensive coverage in Swedish newspapers. Professor K. Maślankiewicz and Associate Professor Alfred Majerowicz supervised the trip,
1971 — The Circle underwent a name change. Initially established as the “Scientific Circle of Young Geologists”, it was renamed to “Student Scientific Circle of Geologists” in 1971. From the 1950s to the 1970s, the Circle functioned within the framework of the Polish Students Union (ZSP). Starting in 1983, it operated under the auspices of the University of Wroclaw,
1971 — This year marked a high in terms of the Circle’s activities with a record number of scientific camps held in Poland — a total of 4. Additionally, there was a foreign internship in Czechoslovakia and three geological field trips,

SSCG 2

1975 — SSCG’s first foreign scientific camp took place in Bulgaria, exploring the Rhodope Mountains and the Black Sea. Supervised by Czesław August, Tomasz Kulakowski, and Wojciech Śliwinski,
1980 — The second scientific camp in Bulgaria was held, focusing on the Rila-Rhodope Mountains. Supervisors included Janusz Janeczek and Andrzej Muszyński
1981 — Marked as one of the most successful years in the Circle’s history. During this period, the Circle organized seven “mining-mineralogical” excursions to mines, which were challenging to access at the time. Additionally, the scientific and didactic session “Ślęza ’81” took place,
1981 — A camp was organized in Iceland under the supervision of Józef Oberc, Ryszard Kryza, and Andrzej Muszyński, with management by Antoni Stryjewski,
December 1981 —The introduction of martial law led to the “formal” suspension of the Circle’s activities,
1984 — The third consecutive scientific camp in Bulgaria was held, supervised by Ryszard Kryza and Andrzej Muszyński,

SSCG 3

1986 — The Circle’s activities were reactivated. This year saw the first scientific camp in Western Europe in the Circle’s history, with a trip to the Bavarian Alps supervised by Waldemar Sroka,
1987 — A camp in Great Britain, supervisor: Maria Mastelarz, head of the camp: Tomasz Bolanowski,
1989 — A camp in Sweden, supervisor: Waldemar Sroka, head of the camp: Bernard Cedro,

2000 — An expedition to Russia (Lake Baikal), supervisor: Robert Niedźwiedzki, head of the camp: Anna Szynkiewicz,

2011— The Circle is again experiencing a boom in its activities, with field trips to 8 mines, 10 thematic trips in the field of regional geology of Poland, 2 scientific camps (in the Bieszczady Mountains and Albania), 2 conferences, 8 lectures, 3 educational rallies for middle and secondary school students, SSCG students helping organize 2 mineralogical exchanges as well as taking part in 3 international conferences and publishing popular science articles in such journals as “Przegląd Geologiczny” (Eng. Geological Review) and “Przegląd Uniwersytecki” (Eng. University Review) (8 articles) and conference abstracts in “Mineralogical Magazine” and “Mineralogia Special Papers”. For organizing the best scientific expedition in the 2010/2011 academic year, the Circle was honored with an award from the Minister of Science and Higher Education.
