Description of activities
The topics currently undertaken by the ten-person team focus on research concerning:
– isotope composition of carbon and nitrogen in the organic matter of peat and sediments in the context of climate conditions reconstruction,
– biogas yield and methane fermentation,
– nitrogen transformations in the soil environment, especially denitrification,
– anaerobic decomposition of organic matter, especially focusing on the pathways of various organic acids which are precursors to methanogenesis,
– polymers such as lignin, cellulose, and hemicellulose originating from sediments and fossil wood of different ages and maturity stages,
– surface water studies – conducted in collaboration with Polish industry, mainly mining
Laboratory equipment
Biosan UVT-S-AR PCR Laminar Flow Cabinet

The cabinet is designed for clean work with DNA samples that provides protection against contamination and is equipped with: |
– a UV flow germicidal lamp that ensures continuous decontamination inside the chamber during operation, |
– a UV recirculator containing a lamp, fan and dust filters placed in a special casing, ensuring that the user working inside is shielded from UV radiation, |
– an automatic function that turns off the open UV lamp when the front window is raised. |
SARTORIUS Stedim Bioreactors

Bioreactors (5L) – 3 pieces with a vertical stirrer and options for controlling temperature, pH, oxygen concentration, septum for gas sample collection, option to supply nutrients, and collect samples without opening the reactor. It comes with a control and data collecting module and a pressure sensor. Used in fermentation research. |
Bioreactors (6pcs) of 1.5 L capacity with vertical stirrer and temperature control, with septum for gas sampling and pressure sensor. |
250 ml batch bioreactors with sampling septum. |
OHAUS SHR-2D Digital Shaker

Designed for various applications requiring precision and repeatability such as cell cultures, chemical extractions, solution mixing, and solubility testing. |
– reciprocating motion in both directions characterized by a stroke length of 19 mm, |
– speed range from 20 to 300 rpm. |
